Dr Mclean is a clinical psychologist that specializes in exposure therapy for PTSD. PE is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that works to shift behavior or styles of thinking in a short amount of time. This type of therapy that’s focused on trauma and learning to address the trauma. With PE you do the opposite of avoid and face the things you want to avoid.
Dr Mclean talking about avoidance and how if you avoid things you eventually start living a really small life really hit home with me. I was living a very small and closed off life when things were at their worst. I still naturally gravitate to my own personal bubble even now. If I do that for too long I start noticing simple things like the grocery store or the post office start getting uncomfortable again. I’m not sure if it was because of PE or coincidence that I was trying a VA PE course when I ultimately decided to do this podcast. I have thought about PTSD and how to share what I have learned/plan to learn while exploring all things PTSD related. I just leaned into that uncomfortableness because the only negative will be some short lived embarrassment.
